Lip fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), which is a substance that naturally occurs in the dermis of the skin. It can be found in many beauty products, as it is a hydrophilic molecule, meaning that it attracts water. It can hold up to 1000 x its own weight in water making it an excellent hydrator.
Lip fillers are a cosmetic treatment, and like all procedures, there is always a chance that something could go wrong. However, if performed by experienced and qualified practitioners, it is a safe procedure.
Probably the most obvious difference between a needle and a cannula is that the tip of a needle is sharp while a cannula is blunt. a cannula is far less likely to pierce and pass through the blood vessels making it a safer option administering lip fillers.
It varies from person to person but generally, lip filler treatment is not that painful. Of course, the discomfort level will mostly depend on your own pain tolerance. We do use numbing cream to help reduce pain.
Initially, there is some swelling and the lips may feel bigger than you would like. this swelling will soon go down to reveal the final result. This usually takes a week to 2 weeks but can take longer. There may be some bruising but this would normally be minimal.
Sometimes, filler can cause a small lumps to appear, these can typically be massaged and will disappear.
Typically, lip filler lasts at least 6 months according to the manufacturer’s literature. However in reality, we have found that lip filler treatments have lasted much longer, in some cases well over 12 months. it can depend on your own metabolism.
We recommend that you only go to medically qualified and experienced injectors. Any non medically trained person can attend a course and provide this service, however if a complication occurs they will not have the knowledge or prescription drugs required to resolve the issue.
We do not believe that non medics such as beauticians have the appropriate level of medical knowledge and training for lip filler injection treatment. Of course, this is our own opinion and you are advised to do your own research.
Stay out of the gym for at least 24 hours and avoid any strenuous or hot activities such as saunas.
You may need to take pain relief and an antihistamine to help with pain and swelling.
If you use a hyaluronic acid filler, yes, the filler will dissolve over a period of time. They can also be dissolved by using a prescription drug called hyalase to break down the particles and speed up the rate at which the fillers dissolve.
